Emotional Strength®
The ability to respond in an open and vulnerable way.

Emotional Strength®
‘Emotional Strength® is the ability to respond in an open and vulnerable way in the face of intense emotional experience, feeling one’s way deeper into the emotion which allows access to implicit functional processes driving action', (Faye & Hooper, 2018, p. 10).
-
Contrary to the classical view of emotion, negative emotion is not the problem, it is our judgement and the subsequent disconnection from emotion that leads to undesired behaviour. When we feel our way deeper into the emotion, we have access to deep internal resources connected to our purpose and values.
-
Our Founding Chair, Sharon Faye, introduced the concept of Emotional Strength® to her business clients and has applied the practical application of this concept for almost two and a half decades. It has been demonstrated that building Emotional Strength® is life changing in all areas of business and in day-to-day life. Past and current clients are incredibly grateful for the difference practicing Emotional Strength® has made to their own personal wellbeing and those of their families and friends.
-
Sharon has dedicated her life to researching and teaching the importance of emotion in all aspects of our thoughts, decisions and actions. This commitment initially grew from enduring abuse, trauma and deprivation throughout her childhood and teen years. In learning to survive, Sharon discovered a paradox - moving toward her emotional pain and digging deep into her internal world empowering her to find another way. That other way is Emotional Strength® – Sharon’s original emotion theory.
-
Sharon first presented Emotional Strength® to the International Conference on ‘Emotions and Worklife’ in Berlin in 2008, and in 2018, Sharon and her colleagues published an academic paper on Emotional Strength® in the Journal “New Ideas in Psychology”. Sharon now shares this concept with the Institute to enhance the research and impact it can have on society.
